The pavilion was built in commemoration of the founder of the College, Dr. Ch'ien Mu, who wrote the ‘Concept of the Union of Man and Nature’.

It commands an excellent view of Tolo Harbour and the Pat Sin Range beyond, comprises a pond in its overall architecture. Viewed from a certain angle, the reflection of the sky on the pond’s surface and the real scenery of the Tolo Harbour joins as one, most aptly illustrating Dr. Ch'ien's concept.

Lake Ad Excellentiam perfectly demonstrates how artifical habitats can serve as wildlife habitats in the urban area, providing abundant food supply and shelter for various animals and insects. As Chung Chi College’s most famous landmark, the name ‘Weiyuan’ also echoes with the college's motto, ‘In Pursuit of Excellence’.
